Cello by James Briggs, Glasgow, 1927
Excellent example of this maker’s work and in superb condition.
James Briggs was born in Wakefield in 1855 and had an active career in Glasgow from 1893. Briggs learnt his craft with William Tarr (Manchester). He was awarded a gold medal at the Leeds Exhibition in 1890 followed by multiple diplomas from Paris and Vienna.
This handsome Scottish cello has been finished with a typical craquelure varnish of a yellow-amber colour.
It features a rich and powerful sound overall with a good projection.
