Cello by James & Henry Banks, Salisbury circa 1800
James and Henry Banks (1858-1831 and 1770-1830) were the sons of the no less famous English maker Benjamin Banks. Father and sons worked together until Benjamin’s death in 1795. Henry specialised in pianoforte but it still takes an expert eye to this day to distinguish James and Benjamin’s respective instruments as they shared a very similar workmanship from patterns to a characteristic red-coloured varnish.
This handsome cello which has been carefully restored in our workshop is a good example of the Banks family with its rich red-brown varnish.
An opportunity for a good English cello at a reasonable price.
The sound is strong, fully bodied and yet warm.
